The "free design” enables a largely unbound design of the homepage. So it is independent of homepage structures e.g. FRAME AREAS. 

Under item "Design" in the member area and then at  "Freely customizable" you can select the "Free design" (No. 15) and adjust numerous individual settings via the link "Adjust your template presets yourself. (Wallpaper & textcolors)".
