NARODOWY STARY TEATR – celebrates its... 226 anniversary this year! The Methuselah of Polish stages is at the same time a symbol of the most beautiful pages from the history books of Polish theatre, it is still a living tradition of great performances and great names, but also of constant quest and opening to new trends, of experiments and sensitivity to the present.
This is where the greatest Polish directors have created their productions over the years and some of them still create (Konrad Swinarski, Jerzy Jarocki, Andrzej Wajda, Krystian Lupa, Mikołaj Grabowski, Paweł Miśkiewicz). Working at Stary Teatr still elevates new generations of artists; the best performances of Maja Kleczewska, Michal Zadara, Jan Klata were directed here.
“In its best periods Stary Teatr did not aim at being a national theatre (at least not mainly). It was first of all a theatre of quest, a theatre of young, radical ideas, a theatre of ‘man and life’” (Krystian Lupa, “Tygodnik Powszechny”).
