NEXT PRODUCTION
25 - 29 NOVEMBER 2008
I AM A CAMERA By John Van Druten
The Playhouse Theatre’s next production is the drama ‘I am a Camera ‘by John van Druten based on the novels of Christopher Isherwood. The play is better known as the film and musical ‘Cabaret’ with Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles. ‘ I am a Camera’ has no singing and dancing but is just as lively and set in 1930’s Berlin with the would be cabaret artist Sally Bowles, played by Lauren Davies, trying to impress Christopher (Benji Dotan) with her talents. The plot is further complicated when Christopher’s English lessons bring gigolo Fritz Wendle (Max Lawrence) and department store heiress Natalia Launder, played by Natasha Cobby, together. Director, Rob Kendall, says that much of the dialogue of the play was used in the film as the impossible and frivolous nature of Sally Bowles is compared to the undertone of the rise of the Nazis exemplified by Ingrid Heymann’s Fraulein Schneider’s attitude. However Sally Bowles dreams might be realised with the arrival of playboy American Clive (Robin Armstrong) but equally under threat when Sally’s mother, Mrs. Watson-Courtneidge, played by Suzanne Richards, arrives unexpectedly from England. The title of the play ‘I am a Camera’ is how Isherwood sees himself commenting on the Berlin of the 1930’s and his part in it. Directed by Rob Kendall Doors open from 7pm Curtain up 7.45pm Tickets - £6.50 (Concessions £5) Tickets can be purchased on the night from the Box Office or reserved by calling the Box Office on 01604 627791
