Colour Genetics

The most important things to get right when remembering colour genetics is that both parents contribute 1 gene each on each part, and that sometimes the colour you see is not the pure colour in the genetic code as weaker colours can be carried by stronger colours, and will only be expressed when 2 meet up. 

Agouti is the most dominant colour, being that way it can carry genes to make all sorts of colours when put to a rabbit also carrying those genes.  However being very dominant means that if you put an agouti patten rabbit to say a self pattern rabbit you will get more agouti out than anything.

 

Agouti pattern colours are:  (the parts in purple are the parts that are different from the strongest colour changes are explained in brackets, they have the same effect whatever the pattern is on the first bit A_ at_ or aa)

Agouti (wild rabbit brown)  A_B_C_D_E

Opal (blue agouti)   A_B_C_dd_E (colour has been diluted to blue)

Orange (yellow agouti)  A_B_C_D_ee (black has been removed but not completley by the double presence of the non-extension gene)

Fawn (blue yellow agouti)  A_B_C_ddee (as for orange and the colour has been diluted)

Cinnamon (chocolate agouti)  A_bbC_D_E (black has been turned brown)

Lynx (lilac agouti / blue chocolate agouti)  A_bbC_ddE_ (Black has been turned to brown and colour has been diluted)

Chinchilla A_B_Cchd_D_E_ (yellow pigment has been removed from the hair)

Squirrel (blue chinchilla) A_B_Cchd_ddE_ (yellow pigment has been removed and the colour has been diluted)

 

The next pattern down in the strangth series is the tan pattern.  This gene turns an agouti into an otter, and a chinchilla into a fox.  It takes out some of the banding in the coat.  A tan pattern rabbit is halfway between an agouti and a self.  A tan pattern rabbit  can't carry agouti.

Sooty Otter at_B_C_D_ee (Sooty otters are not a howable colour)

Beige Otter at_B_C_ddee (Beige otters are not a showable colour

Chocolate Otter at_bbC_D_E

Any of the above colours apart from the yellow colours would become foxes if the C was replaced with cchd.

The final colour pattern is self.  This removes all the banding from the coat, therefore turning an agouti rabbit black.

Agouti pattern rabbits can carry otter or self.  Otter rabbits can carry self, but can't carry agouti.  Self rabbits can't carry any other pattern.  Anything denoted above in capital letters can carry anything in lower case letters.  The lower case can't carry anything else, hence i know there is a complete pair on those parts.

The Red eyed white gene when it pairs up with another red eyd white gene, puts a white coat on a coloured rabbit, so therefor the rabbit could be any colour underneath and genetically and only test mating will provide the answer. (although hints could be obtained by look at the pedigree)
