When
free-spirited yoga instructor Dharma Finkelstein meets conservative
attorney Greg Montgomery, it's love at first sight. Unfortunately,
there is absolutely no love in the air when Dharma's hippie parents
and Greg's blue-blood establishment parents finally meet after
their children have already married at a drive-thru chapel in Reno.
With friends and family all suggesting that a quick annulment would
be best, it's no surprise that the couple begins to second-guess
their impulsive nuptials. But it's soon evident that nothing can
stand in the way of true love!

Okusama wa majo -
Bewitched in Tokyo
masterpiece made in
Japan * Capolavoro fatto in
Giappone
During
the 1960's, Japanese TV was still in its early stages and there
was, consequently, a deficit of original Japanese programming to
air other than news and sporting events (Japanese TV drama hardly
existed at that time). To fill the void, foreign programs filled
the time slots; and the primary source for these programs was the
U.S. Thus, when Bewitched became a smash hit on American TV, it
wasn't long before TBS (yes, they were around back then) dubbed the
show into Japanese and imported it to Japan as "okusama wa majo"
(literally "My Wife is a Witch"). Now, in winter of 2004, the
people of TBS are tipping their hats to classic American sitcoms
and have created their own version of Bewitched - this time set in
Tokyo.
I'll
assume most of you know what the original "Bewitched" was about,
but for those who don't, it's about a regular guy who is married to
a witch. And this is exactly what "Bewitched in Tokyo" is about as
well. In the first episode, a witch named Arisa (Yonekura Ryouko)
departs from the witch world (wherever that me be) to live among
humans as one of them. So, she clumsily arrives in Tokyo on her
broom and accidentally uses her magic to win a drawing for a free
apartment which she quickly moves into. In order to live among
humans, she promises never to use her magic again... a promise
which is, of course, broken several times over for the
entertainment of the viewer.
It
doesn't take long, of course, before she meets Matsui Jouji (Harada
Taizou), a typical Japanese salaryman; and they are married by the
second episode. Just as in the original Bewitched, Arisa's mother
(played by Natsuki Mari) doesn't approve of the match and is
constantly appearing in mirrors and around the house in order to
bother Arisa with more complaints and reasons why she shouldn't
have married Jouji. She also doesn't believe in Arisa's ability to
live among humans and to resist using her magic, because she
believes that humans and witches are just fundamentally different
and can never live together.
Arisa's
mother starts showing up at Jouji's workplace and attempting to get
him in trouble or to coerce him into being unfaithful to Arisa.
Some of Arisa's other relatives may also pop in now and then and
start screwing with Jouji's life and the other people at his
workplace. Jouji has a very pure heart and is very much in love
with Arisa, so he is not about to willingly do anything that Arisa
wouldn't approve of. It is hard for Arisa to always keep her faith
in him though. Their love will be tested vigorously over the
episodes, and (this is pure speculation, but) I'm sure in the
second-to-last episode their relationship will be seriously
threatened for some reason and it will begin to look as if Arisa
will have to return back to the "witch world" for one reason or
another. It will surely end happily though, so don't worry and just
enjoy the ride.
Arisa's
mother is probably the one element in the show that I found most
similar to the original Bewitched. Most everything else in the show
reminds me very little of the original. Seeing the preview
commercials for this show that had a retro look to them and played
the original theme song in the background prepared me for a show
that was a bit closer to the original. True, the show does use the
original theme music constantly, but I guess they felt that the
show had to be drastically altered for its new setting in
present-day Tokyo; and I can understand that point of view because
obviously a lot of things did have to be
changed.
However,
there are other changes that didn't really need to be made. For
instance, Arisa usually doesn't wiggle her nose when she uses her
magic like Samantha did in Bewitched. I think they only showed her
mother do it once in one of the episodes so far. And also, Arisa
just doesn't use her magic as often as Samantha did, because of the
promise she makes in the first episode. Most of the magic usage in
the show is by Arisa's mother and other relatives who drop in
occasionally, and most of it is used to torment Jouji, who is just
trying to get by at work. Instead of being called "My Wife is a
Witch", it should almost be called "My Wife's Family are Witches".
Of course, they are allowed to change whatever they want, and no
one said that they have to make it as much like the original as
possible.
However,
the characters in this show just aren't very good, to put it
bluntly. The characters in the original Bewitched probably had more
depth, ridiculous as that may sound. Arisa is really just a smiling
idiot (kind of similar to previous Yonekura Ryouko characters) who
doesn't quite know everything about the human world. Jouji is a
hollow all-around good guy character who's very easily pushed
around by the other characters. Arisa's mother is probably the best
character because at least she has attitude and most of the good
dialogue. She provides most of the entertaining scenes, but her
stubbornness isn't really firm enough for the audience to
understand her motivation.
To put it
simply, this show is 90% gimmick and 10% substance. TBS is relying
too much on the interesting idea of remaking an old show and the
gimmick of characters who can use magic. It's a comedy show with no
drama or romance that you can really take seriously. On the other
hand, I have to admit that I have been entertained by some of the
episodes (others weren't so good). So, I guess it's just one of
those comedy shows where you can't take the characters or story too
seriously. Some of the episodes were a little boring, but it's not
a bad drama. If you have any interest in checking out this
inter-cultural, inter-generational drama, then you should go ahead
and give it a shot if you can get your hands on
it.
Arisa: I want to live
together with humans too.
Daria: That's impossible. You just used your magic a moment
ago.
Arisa: I just... I just got angry and wanted to help that
woman...
Daria: Regardless of the reasons, magic is magic. Just because we
can use magic we're completely different from humans. We can never
possibly get along.
Arisa: Then I won't use magic!
Daria: No way. Really! That painting is in such bad taste! ... That
table would be better over there, and then the chair should go over
there...
